Joining Together in Wales: An Adult and Young People's Strategy to Reduce Re-offending
This strategy sets out our joint determination to reducing crime and creating stronger and safer communities in Wales.
To make life better for us all we have to tackle the conditions which lead some people into crime in the first place, and to develop services which prevent repeated offending in the future.
This strategy identifies all those factors which increase the risk of re-offending, from the need to have a place to stay to treatment for alcohol or drug addiction. It outlines the wide range of agencies, including volunteers, willing to play a part in providing the services we need. It is specific to Wales and takes account, not only of groups and initiatives unique to Wales, but also of the difference which devolution has made to government. It is founded on the Pathfinder exercise which recognised that the different Welsh perspective needed special consideration and involved wide consultation.
This strategic focus, along with other developments, such as the new National Offender Management Service and the All Wales Youth Offending Strategy, have the potential to transform the lives of those involved in crime and, just as importantly, those who are affected by it and to play a key part in building safer communities throughout Wales.
What are needed now are the detailed and practical measures to deliver this key part of our strategy for building stronger and safer communities throughout Wales. We hope that many of you will respond to the consultation in order that we may develop an action plan to deliver the vision set out in this document in Wales.
Baroness Scotland, Minister of State at the Home Office and Edwina Hart, Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Social Justice and Regeneration
